After Schiaparelli (AKA the $1 Suit)
R - idiomatically, a plain black suit representing the ‘armour’ men wear to work
|
L – a riotous embrace of the possibilities and challenges facing gender identity
In the 1930s, Elsa Schiaparelli was groundbreaking in embracing the possibilities of fashion to subvert traditional expectations of femininity, including embracing visible zippers and shocking pink as symbols of empowerment. By reconfiguring a $1 Op Shop suit with recycled and found materials, shifting boundaries of gender, roles and expectations are resurveyed. The glass ceiling, middle age invisibility and binary fashion are explored.
